Rosco's Rant No 4 Print E-mail

The ranting seems to be falling on deaf ears! Saturday's performance against a determined Old Scotch mirrored the performance against Old Brighton the previous week. V-Line would have been ecstatic with the passenger numbers on Saturday at Camberwell.

Rosco's Rant No 3 Print E-mail

I have been delaying writing this match report. Old Brighton were convincing six goal winners in difficult conditions at the nation of football, Football World. Old Brighton outpointed Old Trinity in every aspect of the game and deserved their victory. Most Old Trinity players put in lacklustre performances and lacked the consistency of past weeks. This can't be accepted!

OTs Turn Things Around Print E-mail

On the back of a massive drubbing the previous week, OTs were quickly out of the blocks against Old Brighton on Saturday kicking the first four goals. Brighton recovered late in the term to be just 9 points down at the first break.

An arm struggle ensued for the next quarter and a half but a late flurry of goals in the third saw Trinity stretch its lead to over four goals at the final change. Brighton had its opportunities in the last kicking 2.6 to go down decidedly by 14 points.

Andrew Ramsden was the best forward and Tim Howell the best backman while Callum Pohl and Andrew Hore-Lacy dominated their respective wings, while Nick Howell in the centre was unstopable.

Rosco's Rant Round 2. Print E-mail

Old Trinity ventured to Toorak Park for the big clash against Old Xavs. Old Xavs were full of confidence following a convincing ten goal victory against Collegians on the opening day of season 2010. Old Trinity were intent on putting on a more competitive showing than the practise match three weeks prior. That day Old Trinity resembled the Washington Generals as Old Xavs showed the small gathering every trick in the football book of amazing and wonderful football feats. The away rooms at Toorak Park are a delight to visit each year. The pungent odour of fresh possum urine greeted Old Trinity players as we prepared for the big game. Well at least I think it was possum waste! It may well have been one of the boys trying a new fragrance of men's aftershave.

The game started very frantically with Old Xavs kicking the first two goals of the game in quick succession. They held a four goal lead late in the term however Old Trinity edged closer with two late goals. Andrew Hore-Lacy proved a lively option up forward. He needed to lift after a disgraceful display of undisciplined football which resulted in two 25 metre penalties and a goal. That was a SNARL! Ben Weissenfeld gained plenty of the football in the midfield and backline. He used it well and set up many forward thrusts.

Goals against the wind was the main reason Old Xavs held a handy lead at half time. Tim Delphine was holding the fort down back against a very good opponent and Matt Weissenfeld was using the ball creatively out of defence. Angus Greene was Brett Burton like in his approach at the football. He kicked Old Trinity back into the contest with his mercurial marking and goal kicking. Scott Meighan was solid as always across half back. His misely defensive game almost had his opponent in tears nearing the half time siren.

The feeling in the rooms was good at the main break. It was in fact the shortest half time break in football history as Old Xavs were unfurling their senior flag at 1.45pm on the oval. I was told by the umpire that the 1pm rule would be applied. If anyone knows what the 1pm rule is can they inform me as I have absolutely no clue as to it's origin and meaning.
Old Xavs opened up a seven goal lead early in the third term and things weren't looking good. The application of the Old Trinity players in the following twenty minutes was outstanding. Matt Hale kept jumping high in the ruck. He will be playing in the ruck this week! Angus Greene kicked a long goal against the breeze to bring the margin back to within five goals. He used the protection of the large building at the Malvern Rd end of the ground to his advantage. Tom Oldfield continued his football evolution as a creative key backman. He gained plenty of the ball and used it effectively. Old Trinity was still in the game at the final break and kicking with the wind in the last. An upset was on the cards!

I would love to write that I inspired the side to a memorable victory with my stirring words. Unfortunately this was not the case! Old Xavs flexed their muscles, ran harder and used the ball better to run out clear winners in the end. Jim Wilson and Nick Bradley battled hard throughout the last quarter but Old Xavs had the better of the last quarter. They won the first three quarters by five goals and the last quarter by five goals. 5 + 5 = 10. A ten goal loss at the final siren.
This week we return to the nation of football, Football World, for a clash with Old Brighton. At stake is a 2-1 start to the year. A must win game! There are going to be some tough decisions to be made at selection so all players must train!

The first chilly mornings of the year are a welcome herald of start of a new football season Print E-mail

Back in the top league, Old Trinity faces new challenges which come with promotion, as well as those perennial ones proffered by retirements, relocations and injuries.

In its first outing OT faced its Bulleen Road neighbour in Marcellin. Both sides had been slated in the day’s Amateur Footballer to finish in the bottom half of the ladder, so some might have dismissed the contest as the first salvo in the relegation battle. Insiders, of course, have higher ambitions!

It was, by any measure, going to be a test of the playing group’s depth. One third of the side that had taken the field in the previous game (the 2009 Grand Final) was missing. The opportunity was there for other players – including a handful of first-gamers – to step up.

Marcellin started much the better kicking the first goal before OT had touched the ball. Tim Howell in the back half showed that his marking skills had not waned in the off season. Both sides were going in hard but were letting themselves down with poor skills, especially when close to goal. This was especially damaging to Andrew Ramsden, lining up in his customary position at full forward. Indiscriminate forays into the forward fifty gave him little opportunity to use his marked height advantage, especially against some effective zoning and double teaming by Marcellin. Tim Chivers however filled a gap nicely and kicked two effective goals in the second term. At half time OT had sneaked to a 2 goal advantage and looked the more settled side.

The third quarter was again even in outcome, though OT had by far the best of the chances. Andrew Burke was playing an effective game in the back half, using his vigour and bulk to spoil several attacking moves. Kristian Butler , in a BoG performance, was providing dash and linkage from a half back. When Jack Osborne was injured half way through the term, some of the impetus that OT was building seemed to evaporate. Not to be outdone Marcellin started to lift its intensity and finished the quarter outscoring OT by a goal.

The last quarter started in much the same vein – Marcellin showing purpose and tenacity to take the lead just a few minutes in. OT found itself in an unexpected position, especially given its dominance in attacking moves. They scored again to regain the lead only to have it snatched away again by a persistent opponent. It was looking like a classic arm wrestle to the line. It was a position from which an inexperienced side might well capitulate.

The last ten minutes pointed instead to side with poise: an inexperienced midfield was well led by Matt Jessop, along with Anthony Kenna and Jed Burgess and first-gamer Calum Pohl working hard through the middle. Rob Humann, marked strongly and converted to give OT the lead again, while another rookie in Harry Tinney kept popping up across the half forward running hard and creating a target. After breaking a couple of tackles, he almost put the game beyond question with a goal on the run. Five unanswered goal saw Old Trinity get home comfortably. But the result did not reflect the closeness of the contest, nor the composure of the young winners.

Roscoe's Rant Print E-mail

7 long months! 7 long months of cricket, horse racing and the Winter Olympics. Old Trinity returned to Football World on Saturday to begin their 2010 campaign. Many players and coaches undertook the annual pilgrimage to the local hairdresser for their Round One haircut. This tradition was started by the great Collingwood mentor Jock McHale in 1927. Collingwood's Round One clash with South Melbourne was postponed so that Jock could get his "short, back and sides" haircut. Fortunately for Jock he did as the haircut inspired the Magpies to a record four consecutive premierships. The thought of that dynasty truly makes me sick!

On Saturday Old Trinity faced Marcellin for the Bulleen Cup. The Bulleen Cup is one of the more prestigious cups in world sport and is hotly contested by the two great clubs.
Scott Meighan captained Old Trinity for the first time and had a successful start to the game by winning the toss of the coin and fittingly given the opposition kicked towards the Marcellin College end of the ground. Tim Lane kicked the first goal of the game before the siren in what was the most perfect start to any football encounter. Andrew Hore-Lacy was lively across half forward and Matt Weissenfeld kicked a goal on his left foot late in the term. Old Trinity held a two goal lead at the first break

.
The second term was a different affair with Marcellin taking control by kicking three unanswered goals. Humbler and Andrews were beginning to twitch as Marcellin worked harder all over the field. Jim Wilson chipped in with an important goal late in the term to bring the margin back under one goal at the main break.
The third term was an old fashioned arm wrestle with both sides refusing to wilt under the enormous pressure. A late goal to Old Trinity brought the scores level on the siren. Both coaches knew the game was their to be won. It was simply a matter of which side was willing to work the hardest.

Joel Aitken was sensational in the final term and Chris Pawsey extracted the digit with some really important "hardball gets". Richard Mason kicked Old Trinity's final goal for the game after a terrific build up from the half back line.

The win was pleasing however Old Trinity will have to improve significantly if we are going to challenge Old Xavs in the big clash at Toorak Park.
