New Name for Old Comp Print E-mail

Last Monday week (3rd February), the VAFA Board endorsed the re-badging of VAFA’s seven senior sections. A Section will from now be known as Premier Football. The publicised changes are:

PREVIOUS NAME

NEW NAME

A SECTION

PREMIER

B SECTION

PREMIER B

C SECTION

PREMIER C

D1 SECTION

DIVISION 1

D2 SECTION

DIVISION 2

D3 SECTION

DIVISION 3

D4 SECTION

DIVISION 4

In announcing the decision, which had been canvassed previously with the VAFA Club Directors, CEO Michael Sholly said that the VAFA believed there were “benefits on several levels.”

He continued: “The renaming lends more prestige to all levels of our competition. We expect that it will assist our clubs with recruiting and in dealing with local councils.

“It gives clubs on the lower rungs an immediate and more attainable goal of reaching Division 1 and then perhaps lifting through the Premier tiers. It recognises the strength of our clubs and the ranking of our competition at the peak of community football.

“While all in the VAFA community have understood our gradings, most outside our community haven’t.
While our top step has always been “A Section”, many have referred to it as “A Grade”.  Now all will know it as Premier Football," the CEO said.

Past Players (60s & 70s) Reunion Print E-mail

There will be a reunion of old players and supporters (from the 60s and 70s) which will be held at the Marles Playing Fields on Sunday March 28th from 11:30 am. A delightful roast luncheon will form just part of the proceedings, and drinks will be available.

The Sixties and Seventies were exciting times indeed for the fledgling Old Trinity Club. Formed in 1954, it took a whole 9 years, till 1968, for the club to contest its first Grand Final and win promotion from Section E to (then) Section D. Yes, those were less “caring” times when the sensibilities of players and supporters were not catered for to quite the same extent as today, and if you were just starting you needed to work you way up from lowly Division E!

Still, the Club showed a taste for success, and in just another 7 years it had worked its way into Section A – having in that period played in 4 Grand Finals (1968, '70, '71 and '74), and having won 2: in 1970 Old Trinity beat Fairfield to gain promotion to Section C and in 1974 it beat Monash Blues to finally reach Section A. The Club spent 3 seasons in Section A before dropping back to Section B in 1978. Tough times followed with the club dropping back to Section E before rising again to be consistently in Sections A or B since 1987.

But regardless of the on-field endeavours of those years, a distinguishing attribute of the period was the vibrant social life that existed off the field, and the many life-long friendships that were forged at the time. It is these, as much as the footballing feats, that will be celebrated on the day.

*******

The entry price will include an update of the souvenir booklet produced for the 1991 reunion (one per family).  It will include photos from the day, and will be posted after the event.

Comings & Goings - Pre-Season News Print E-mail

The pre-season training, which has been going on since November, is now well into its final stages with a Training Camp and practice matches starting to come into consideration.

The Pre-Season Camp will take place the week-end of 20th and 21st February at the Coralyn Football Club in Coralyn. Details of the practice matches as they come to hand.

As is unavoidable at every club and in every year there have been some departures and some arrivals;

We note with regret the departure of Andy Cultrera to play this season with his former club – Aquinas. For many years Andy (pictured, right, in a dashing mood) was, with Andrew Ramsden, the shorter (though by no means the lesser) half of the most prolific scoring combination in the VAFA. He won the Club goal kicking award in 4 of the last 7 years (being just pipped by ‘Rambo’ in 2009), as well as the VAFA’s award in 2006 and 2007 (with 69 and 62 goals respectively). He (and his charming partner Sarah) will be missed at the club and we wish them well.

In the “Arrivals” lounge, however, we find Callum Pohl, a young midfielder who, as an Under 19’s, won the Senior B&F at Hurstbridge in 2009. Also back from stints at other clubs are 2 welcome additions – Matt Kilpin (back from Port Melbourne) and Dayne Coulsen-Hoffacker (from the Bendigo Bombers). Given that last year neither spent much time at the club, it’s like picking up 2 brand new players.

Coach Brett Chandler reports from the training track:
We have seen 56 faces thus far and are averaging about 30 players on the track at any one session. Since returning from the Xmas break the enthusiasm and intensity has been very encouraging, culminating in a record turn out last night of 55 players! All players are aware of the rigours of A-grade football and understand that hard work is the ingredient to our success this season.
Players who have stood out in the pre-season include Jack Osborn, Tim Chivers, Tim Delphine, Luke Pacconi, Anthony Kenna and Jake Walsh.

Old Trinity Amateur Football Club – 12th annual corporate golf day. Print E-mail

What a huge couple of weeks – Tiger and Greg were in town.  One playing golf, the other spruiking golf, but the major event was of course the Old Trinity Football Club’s 12th annual golf day – held at Australia’s # 1 golf & country club - The Heritage.

60+ golfers hit the Henley Course at 7:45am on what could only be described as perfect course conditions and weather – hence some excellent scores.

After spending 4+ hours out hitting that little white ball (some had more hits than others mind you), the footy club were fortunate to hear our guest speaker Mr Stan Alves reminisce about the good old days in the VFL/AFL system, plus also listen to Stan’s introduction to league football – quite amazing how many hurdles Stan hit prior to joining the MFC in 1965.

Female President a First for OT Print E-mail

In a first for Old Trinity Grammarian AFC, the 2009 AGM elected its first female president in its 55-plus history. Robyn Waters - VP last year - took over from Dyson Hore-Lacy who presided over the club in both a relegation year (2008) and, proudly, a promotion year (2009)!

In her inaugural address to the club at the AGM, Robyn thanked Dyson for his "contribution to the Club over the last two years " and assured him that his vast experience and network of contacts would still be called upon in the future.

Also retiring were long-time servants of the club Andrew Kennedy and Ian Jervis. Andrew was President of the club from 1997 to 2000, while Ian served as Secretary from 1998 to 2005. Their departure represents a massive loss of experience but, in Robyn's words, "that splendid knowledge will still be available to us as a Committee". Also downsizing her involvment is Marci Katz, who came to the commiittee just last year armed with boundless enthusiasm and good ideas. Again, a less formal role is anticipated for her.

Returned to the Committee were Alan Burrows (again as Secretary), David Troon (continuing as Treasurer, Tom Healy (Vice President). Vicki Vander Venne and Craig Burgess as Committee Members.

New Committee Structure Required

Indeed, given the reduced size of the Committee (6 in total) some dramatic changes will need to be implemented in the running of the club. Firstly, the Club's constitution may need to be amended to allow for the creation of a binding smaller committee. Secondly, a system of ad-hoc sub-committees is envisaged to tackle individual projects and tasks.

To that end the following motion will be put to a re-adjurned AGM on Monday 23rd November at the Cohen Rooms at 7:00pm: "that the committee of the Old Trinity Grammarians Football Club Inc. will consist of a President, Vice President and/or Immediate Past President, Treasurer, Secretary and a minimum of two and not more than five ordinary members".

Glory, Glitz and Glamour Print E-mail

The traditional AFL Grand Final Eve Old Trinity Best and Fairest Dinner Dance at Hawthorn Receptions more than lived up to its reputation last night as the Old Trinity players and faithful celebrated the return to A Grade for season 2010 and the exploites of the players throughout season 2009.

All present really dressed to impress and Tom Oldfield's technique on "How to get a date for the B&F" seemed to have worked for the number of glamorous females (of all ages) present was a highlight.

The introduction of a count from round twelve for the senior B&F added extra interest and heightened the excitement when Jack Healy took home the Weatherson Medal as the worthy winner.  Jack Osborn won the George Dwyer Cup as runner up and Matt Jessop was a breath away in third place.

President Dyson Hore-Lacy congratulated all present on the efforts throughout the season and officially announced that Senior Coach Brett Chandler is to continue in season 2010.

Brett himself couldn't have been happier with the results of 2009, but issued a strong challenge to all that getting back into A Grade is only the first step and we must all remain focussed and work even harder in 2010.

Not quite the finish we would have liked Print E-mail

Old Trinity's branstorming finish to the sesaon came to an abrupt end last Saturday when Old Melburnians proved a little too strong in the final analysis.

The boys played hard tough footie and led well into the third quarter, but even with the breeze in the last quarter couldn't withstand the final OM onslaught.

The final scores were Old Trinity 12-11 83 to Old Melburnians 18 -21 129.  Our forwards Andrew Ramsden and Andy Cultrera were magnificent kicking four goals each.  Both had a terrific finals series kicking some 27 goals between them.

We can all take heart that we have made it back into A Grade for season 2010 after a lapse of only one year.

The club will celebrate this coming Friday at the Best and Fairest Dinner Dance at Hawthorn Receptions.

TWO DOWN, THE ONE TO GO! Print E-mail

According to Greek and Roman mythology, Aeolus was the God of winds and Venus the Goddess of spring. But sure as hell, there was absolutely nothing mythological about these two deities last Saturday when they conspired to produce dreadful meteorological conditions at Sportscover Arena (and elsewhere) for the B Section preliminary final.

But Old Trinity is nothing if not magnaminous and by 4.30 pm or thereabouts, all was forgiven, for one reason or an other!

STOP PRESS!!!! Print E-mail

Brendan Iezzi wins B Grade Best and Fairest medal at the VAFA vote count and presentation night at Etihad Stadium on Monday night. Brendan polled in 8 games and as we all know at Old Trinity had a cracker of a first half of the season as was borne out by polling 16 votes by round 9. Although he only polled 4 votes in the remaining 9 rounds including a best on ground in our great win over Uni Blacks in round 17, he had done enough to hold off Leigh Fletcher of Hampton Rovers and Ben Dowd of St Kevins.

Our heartiest congratulations Brendan the whole OT community is very proud of you.  Well done!

There's more to do than Eat at a Long Lunch Print E-mail

Our recent Long Lunch Club at one of our major sponsors, The Manningham Club was an outstanding success. One hundred five guests thoroughly enjoyed listening to AFL legend John Kennedy senior as he spoke about his early days at Hawthorn and how their lack of success moulded and shaped his myopic determination to lift the Hawks of the bottom of the ladder and to gain respect.

We also had the privilege of John Connelan who is the President of the Old Xavs Association do a 20 minute stand up comedy routine which brought the house down and then John conducted the Irish auction which raised over $4,000. We have been extremely fortunate over the past 2 years that John has offered his services (gratis) and we are extremely grateful.

Another great day and the club raised in excess of $6,000. Many thanks to all the OT supporters who attended.
