Under 19 match report

Round 4 v Manningham Sharks (Home)

“Under 19’s on a roll!”

Old Trinity 18-14 defeated Manningham Sharks 4-5

1st Q

The under 19’s hit the ground full of confidence after three solid wins and looked to add to this tally but the opposition had other ideas. The first quarter was a solid contest from both sides and a test of defences. The OT’s defence is tighter than double reinforced concrete and nothing was going past the back six of Bear, Robertson, Lane, Widdowson,  Howell and Henschell / Coutts. The difference was when Old Trinity went forward they scored and Shivo (“I can take a grab !”) got the goal umpires waving flags after a massive kick outside the arc set up six points for the home side. Humann was winning the ruck contests and giving the OT onballers in Guerra, Soligo, Murphy and Ahearne lots of touches. Beaton kicked his first of four and Gibbs found space to kick another, as Old Trinity went to a 3-7 scoreline at quarter time, to Manningham Shark’s 1-1.

2nd Q

The second quarter was the season’s most even quarter with both teams having great use of the ball and the scoreline reading 2-0 for both sides. Lancashire was getting plenty of the ball and was well supported by Ahearne, Beggs, Morrison and Lawrence. Jessop had the ball on a string and was creating havoc on the half forward line. Guerra was running and given great support by Shivo, Murphy, Eckersley and the damaging Wisenfeld. This was a solid quarter of footy and although equal in points for the term, Old Trinity had better use of the ball, which brings up special quote number three for the season = “You can have lots of the footy and not score a lot “.

At half time Old Trinity 5-7 Manningham Sharks 3-1

3rd Q

At halftime the side was reminded of the need to protect, run and support. The OT 3rd quarters have been solid all season and this was no exception! The run was there and the ball zipped around the forward line like a golf ball on a concrete floor. Goals came through Soligo, Humann, Jessop, Kappos, Beaton (2) ,Gibbs and Lawrence. It was a 9-5 to the opposition 0-0 quarter. This speaks for itself!

Interchange steward Cam Guerra was recording the rotations beautifully in a busy quarter.

Major contributors were Widdowson, Eckersley, Jessop, Morrison, Humann, Howell and Robertson.  Newcomers in Kappos, Henschell and Lancashire were showing they were warming to the tempo of U/19 footy!

At ¾ time Old Trinity 14-12 to the Sharks 3-1

4th Q

The last chapter of the game saw several positional changes including Beaton going from full forward to full back !Old Trinity controlled the play and added 4-2 for the quarter to the opposition’s 1-4.Several players were tiring due to a massive running game. Hale marked and kicked a great goal and was cheered by a group of female spectators ‘on the hill ‘. The team ran out the quarter and finished strongly due to the fitness work done by the OT fitness guru- ‘Chopper’.

Goal Kickers – Beaton 4, Gibbs 3, Jessop 3, Schivo 2, Humann 2, Kappos 1, Hale 1, Lawrence 1, Soilgo 1.

Best Players- Jessop, Robertson, Humann, Howell, Soligo, Beaton.

Coach’s comment- A really good win after being challenged early. We were a little flat but regrouped to play solid footy in the second half.

We have a team orientated group of players who can do something very special this season if we work together.

Thanks to our team support group this week- Mike Fogarty, Doug Humann, Adam Moretti and Cam Guerra.
