“Under done” and under the pump: Unders go down in the Last
Six weeks, six games, and then the season is over get on board and
bring your mates This was the message from a frustrated Under 19 Coach
Ray Leetham after another last-quarter fade out.
The feedback from all clubs is that we are the most improved side in
the competition and we are, he continued In terms of how many players are
training and playing ability we are about where we should be playing
competitive footy against good sides but falling at the last quarter due to a
lack of game fitness. We must set ourselves a commitment over the last six
games to train weekly and support each other
This most accurately describes the turn of events on Saturday as Old
Trinity (again with a reduced bench, but this time due entirely to players not
turning up!) was held goal-less in the last quarter to go down by 19 points to
top-Four aspirant Beaumaris.
Just for a change, training this Tuesday will be at Boroondara Pool in
Belmore Rd, with
Thursdays session back at
Bulleen
Rd
1st Q
The conditions were chilly with a four goal wind favouring the Marcellin
end of the
Hudson
oval. Old Trinity played attacking football in an even contest, with Bradley,
Fogarty and May the standout players in the first term.
Jack
Hunt found space to kick Old Trinitys first goal while down
back Farrelly, Potter, Birrell and Brandon Jones were getting plenty of the
ball. The major focus was to kick long but the home side was not scoring enough
with the solid breeze.
At quarter time Old Trinity led by 1 point.
2nd Q
Beaumaris used the strong wind to add 4-3 for the term. Old Trinity
stood up in a tight contest to add three straight goals and keep the game wide
open. Solid play came from Bonnington, Spassopoulos, May, Chadwick and Young.
Piccolo and Oldfield were starting to impact on the game as the wind picked up.
Old Trinity was playing attacking football in tough conditions. Goals came from
Chadwick (2) and Cowley.
At half time Old Trinity was 8 points down.
3rd Q
The important third term had to be a goal scoring quarter for Old
Trinity. Great use of the ball saw the mid field set up golden opportunities
but the Beaumaris back men shut down the home sides forward attacks. For the
term goals came from
Jack Hunt and
Brandon Jones, while four points took the O.T.s score to sixteen points for
the quarter, to the oppositions two points. The injured Tinney was solid, as
was Piccolo, J.Hunt, Kepitis and Beasley in his first game back. It was a solid
quarter but a four to five goal buffer was needed to hold out the visitors
last term attack.
At ¾ time Old Trinity led by six points.
4th Q
The last stanza was a tough one. Both sides played attacking football
and Old Trinity showed great skill in working against the strong wind to come
inside the arc on several occasions, to be turned away. Beaumaris, with the
strong wind, attacked the arc and kicked four goals for the term, to Old
Trinitys one point. Murphy,
Dalton,
Hetherington and Oldfield held firm but were overrun by fit running opposition.
In the end the margin was twenty points but it could have been a lot closer.
