Saturday
morning's weather was likened to that of the Scottish Highlands. William
Wallace wouldn't have been impressed with his men had they turned up late to a
battle with the English. My mood was fairly foul as I read text messages of
misadventures on the
Western Ring
Road, harrowing tales of disorientation on the
West Gate Freeway and being blatantly lost at Hanging Rock. This was the big
4th vs 5th clash against St Bernards. I was in no mood for excuses!
Fortunately, once the game started, the commitment of every player could not be questioned.
Old Trinity
played uncompromising football from the first bounce. A sickening clash between
Chris Pawsey and Cam Stockdale in the second term summed up the relentless
pursuit of the football. Both players didn't take their eye off the football.
That brave act inspired the team to a five goal half time lead.
Jay
Arrowsmith led a ferocious forward line. The pressure that the likes of Jay,
Jed Burgess,
Tom Eckersley and
Jeremy Best placed on the St Bernards backline was exceptional. It directly
resulted in four goals throughout the game.
Rob Humann
and Fergus Stewart shared the ruck duties for the game and should be commended
for their outstanding contribution. Fergus kicked a beautiful goal from deep in
the forward pocked in the third term. Many spectators were wondering what style
of kick Fergus would employ as he lined up for goal. He has been practising
torpedo punts, check sides, banana kicks, drop kicks, place kicks, end over end
dribble kicks, spot kicks, scissor kicks and penalty kicks over the past
fortnight at training. After rifling through his "kicking file" he
resorted to a drop punt. An enjoyable moment indeed!
Some others
worth mentioning:
Scott "The Shadow"
Meighan played another excellent game in defence. He is seeing the
benefits of a full pre-season.
Justin Kenna and Will Bowman
worked hard for the entire game. Both will be pushing for senior selection
this week.
Joel Aitken played another
impressive game across the half forward line. Joel played his 100th game
for the club. A day to remember for Joel. Well done!
The win was
a reward for the hard work on the training track over the past three weeks.
Training in the dark on Thursday night was all part of the plan. It was a
"Sheedy like" initiative.
This week
we face Old Carey at Football World. We now sit 3-1. We control our destiny.
Prepare well. Train hard. Be ready for another physical contest this week!
