Peter Schwab AFL Victoria, speaking on the issue:
Our mission statement, which is to sustain and grow
Australian Football as the most played, involved, watched and attended sport
across Victoria for the benefit of participants, stakeholders and
supporters while making a meaningful contribution to the health and wellbeing
of all communities throughout Victoria, underpins this program.
Given the important role that football plays in the lives
of all Victorians, women and men, boys and girls, this Fair Game: Respect Matters violence prevention program
has been welcomed and readily accepted by our football communities.
The incidence and prevalence of violence against women is
alarming. One in five women in
Australia experience sexual
violence after the age of 15. Intimate partner violence is the leading
contributor to illness, disease and death of Victorian women aged 15 to 44.
The total estimated cost of domestic violence in
Australia over
2002-3 was $8.1 billion.
Many of the women, men and children affected by such
violence are members of our community. The Fair Game: Respect Matters program
allows AFL Victoria and our football club communities the opportunity to assist
in the reduction of this violence, and the ongoing impact it has in the lives of our families.
