The match report of the reserves round five encounter against the Uni Blues
Rise and shine, it's Ground Hog Day! Bill Murray's cult film was my first thought as I rolled out of bed Saturday morning. Uni Blacks two weeks ago at the home of the really creative and intelligent and Uni Blues at the same location on Saturday. Unfortunately for Old Trinity, unlike the film where Bill Murray's same day experience ends with a romantic twist, Old Trinity's day ended with another comprehensive defeat against an exceptional opponent.
Before the game, Old Trinity welcomed Joel Ferguson for his first game at the club and Brent Walsh (The Large Feline) returned from a knee reconstruction. Brent (The Large Feline) arrived at the ground shortly before 8am such was his desire to return to football.
The game began with high intensity from both sides. There were no easy possessions for either side. Unfortunately, as has happened numerous times this year, Uni Blues got the jump and scored easy goals through undiscipled efforts and a lack of accountability. Norman provided the highlight for the quarter by plucking the ball out of the ruck and dribbling the ball through the goals from fifteen metres out. Rowan Hill played his best quarter for the season at full back repelling many forward thrusts and Robbie Gamble was strong at centre half back.
The second quarter resembled the beginning of the first quarter. Both sides attacked the ball ferociously, however it was the Uni Blues who were able to capitalise on Old Trinity skill errors. As it looked as though Uni Blues were going to pile on multiple goals, Old Trinity fought back. A strong mark and goal from Jay Arrowsmith was the highlight of the quarter. The contest Fergus Stewart gave in the ruck gave the midfielders a chance of first use of the ball.
Ben Chan was given the task of running with one of Uni Blues' play makers in the third quarter. He was ably assisted by Richard Mason. Brent Walsh (The Large Feline) made his return in the third quarter and signalled his return with two of the dirtiest, filthiest mongrel kicks imaginable. Walsh (The Large Feline) had plenty of the ball in the third quarter and should feel very pleased with his return to football. Mick Elliot moved deep into the forward line and provided Old Trinity with another avenue at goal. Norman marked and kicked successfully and by three qurater time Old Trinity had managed to avoid being blown away by Uni Blues. The features of the Uni Blues game are that they punish sides for skill errors and when they enter their forward fifty they have an excellent scoring strike rate (similar to my scoring strike rate at Cheers in the late 90's).
The final quarter was all about being competitive right up until the final siren. I really believe we did this even though the final score does not reflect this. Fergus Stewart moved to centre half forward and took five strong marks across half forward. Tom Oldfield competed strongly at the centre bounces and all the forwards chased and pressured their opponents when Uni Blues had the ball.
Uni Blues are on the top of the ladder for a reason! They are very skillful (by hand and foot), they are unselfish (they sacrifice their own game for the good of the team) and most importantly and what I believe is the main difference between them and Old Trinity, they execute their game plan with great efficiency (they don't have a weak link!!).
Old Xavs coming up this week at the home of the VAFA (People's Choice for the worst ground in the southern hemisphere...the small primary school ground I played on as a junior at Myrtleford finished second in the poll). It is really important that all Old Trinity players attend two full sessions of training this week to prepare for the big game. Every possession at training is important!
