Another
week passes by, another one begins. Round 10 saw Old Trinity take on Old
Haileybury in a must win game. Before I pass comment on the game, I have a
number of urgent and horrifying issues that I must address.
It
was lovely to see
Tom Oldfield,
Andrew Bourke and
Joel
Aitken in the
VictoriaGardens food court on
Sunday. They were all very excited as they were out on a Sunday outing to see
The Hangover. Joel seemed to be thoroughly enjoying his combination fried rice
that he had purchased from Jimmy Choi's. Jimmy is an old friend of mine who
prides himself on quality Chinese cuisine at a very reasonable price. Tom was
dressed fashionably in his Gazman attire and managed to avoid slopping any of
his lunch on his newly purchased lime green cardigan. Andrew grunted at me as
he was attempting to fit a whole KFC Zinger Burger in his mouth. Chris Pawsey
was also spotted entering the cinema complex. Chris ordered the maxi popcorn
deal which provided him with a bucket of popcorn and a six litre cup of diet
coke. Due to his current fitness campaign he refused to upsize his deal. That's
called discipline!
All
this discussion of films makes me feel like writing a film review. This week we
rewind to the year 1949. The film, The Third Man. Holly Martins is a hack
writer who arrived in
Vienna
just following the completion of WWII. Holly had planned to meet with his old
mate, Harry Lime, but discovers that Lime has been tragically killed in a road
accident. Martins is told a few stories about Lime by a British Army officer
and from Lime's distraught girlfriend. Martins discovers that a third person
helped carry Lime's body from the street following the accident. He sets about
finding the identity of this third man. This is a classic film and is a must
for any serious film viewer. Add it to your DVD collection as it is a
re-watchable classic. If you can't find this film at Civic Video, feel free to
drop around to
Dyson Hore-Lacy's
house on a Wednesday evening. Screening times are 7.30pm and 9.20pm. It's a bit
like Gold Class but the hospitality is warmer in a family friendly way. Don't
get The Third Man confused with The Third Leg, as this could create a very
awkward situation if you are planning to watch the film with a group of people.
Hard Slog to Comfortable
Victory
Old
Haileybury came out firing on Saturday and an upset was on the cards early. Old
Haileybury had "man mountain" Brett O'Farrell standing at full
forward and senior captain Sam Langford-Jones running around on the ball. Old
Trinity settled the better with
Scott Meighan
and
Andrew Marsden teaming well in defence
and Cam Stockdale providing a strong target across half forward. Old Trinity
had a slender lead at the first break.
The
second quarter began positively for Old Trinity with
Jordan
Wise and
Jed Burgess
getting into the game. Max Burgess gained plenty of the ball in the middle and
James Petdro was strong at the stoppages.
Jordan Wise and
Jay
Arrowsmith kicked late goals to extend Old Trinity's lead to
five goals.
Even
though Old Trinity led at the main break, I didn't feel that we were
necessarily playing that well. Old Haileybury came out hard and kicked three
quick goals to bridge the gap between the two sides.
Andrew
Marsden continued to throw himself into the path of a fast
moving freight train much to the horror of all present. These acts of courage
saved the side three goals and proved what a great asset Andrew is to the side.
Old Trinity led by fourteen points at the final change.
I
gave
Jeremy Best a verbal bashing at
the break and it worked wonders. Besty awoke from his hibernation and asserted
his authority on the game. This is hopefully a sign of things to come. Late
goals to
Tom Herrod and
Jay Arrowsmith sealed a comfortable victory in the
end.
This
week Old Trinity face Hampton Rovers in another must win game. We sit in fifth
position so winning is essential from here on in. The next two games (Hampton
Rovers followed by St Bernards) will determine whether we a contenders or
pretenders. Two wins will see us in the four. One win will see us on the outer.
Two losses and season 2009 will be all but gone. It's all about opportunity.
Are we going to take this opportunity? See you at training.
