“Unselfish Football” Sweeps Ressies to Comprehensive Victory
Rosco's
Rant - Round 7
Old Trinity
should be very pleased with their comprehensive victory against Hampton Rovers.
Jay Arrowsmith was playing his first game of football
against
Hampton
Rovers since 1999. On that day, Old Trinity were forced to wear
a "clash" jumper. The powers that be chose bumble bee colours
for the reserves and
Richmond
jumpers for the seniors. Jay, with the
assistance of five trainers, two water boys and a guy walking his dog, squeezed
in his bumble bee jumper. After a promising start to the game, Jay began to
suffer badly from lack of circulation. The
jumper was cut from his body and he was informed by the club doctor that he was
never to wear a tight football jumper ever again.
Fast-forward 10 years:
Justin Kenna played his best game for the season across the half
back line. Justin should be commended on his attitude and effort to the game as
he was clearly disappointed at not being selected in the senior team. Justin
used the ball very well all day and disposed of the ball with his first option
on most occasions. Justin played his position all day and didn't get sucked up
the ground chasing kicks.
Leigh Clarke returned from injury to have a big impact on the
game. Leigh played across half back and also spent some time in the midfield.
He used the ball very well on most occasions and showed real leadership on the
field. Leigh's attitude before, during and after the game was excellent. Like
Justin, Leigh was disappointed not be selected in the senior team but got on
with the task at hand and will be pushing for a senior recall for the next
game.
The first half of football on
Saturday was as unselfish as I have seen an Old Trinity outfit. All players stuck to the plan
without exception. One comment I will make is that it is essential for the
half back line and centre line to play their positions and not get sucked into
our attacking zone. Chris Pawsey, Max Burgess and
Justin
Kenna do this very well. It is just so important that you
don't let the ball get behind you.
Matt Hale
was impressive across the half forward line. After two weeks starring in the
thirds, Matt stepped up very well and I am looking forward to further
improvement in coming weeks.
Jeremy Best
was lively in the forward line and even attempted the mark of the year in the
third term. He was fortunate not to cop a tongue lashing from the coaching
panel. The fact his brother was sitting next to me may have saved him (this
time). Will Bowman was very good in the midfield and particularly enjoyed the
freedom of roving all game. He used the ball very well and ran hard for the
duration of the game.
The third
term was pleasing with all players continuing to play to the plan.
Tim Delphine played his best game for the year. Tim focussed on giving the
first option and clean skills and he was successful on both counts. He was
first in at stoppages on many occasions and showed that he is a very
good option to have play in the midfield.
Jake
Gibson and Tim Chivers both gained plenty of the ball and
worked together beautifully. The Gibson/Chivers combination combined many
times to begin thrusts forward. Both responded to the challenge.
The final
quarter was won by Hampton Rovers who never gave up and are to be commended
on their effort. Old Trinity must prepare now for the next two games: Uni Blacks (in the battle for third spot)
and then St Kevins (in the battle for ???) await us.
