10-Minute Lapse Costs Win Print E-mail

Playing away at Camberwell, a most competitive Old Trinity took it right up to 3rd side Old Scotch, controlling the game for 110 of the 120 minutes of play. However a ten minute lapse at the end of the last quarter eventually cost it the game, as Old Scotch piled on 6 last quarter goals to 2 to take the game by 3 points.

A disappointed coach Ray Leetham commented that “we need to finish games off, especially if we are 30 points up at half time.” In fact Trinity’s lead at the major break was 39 points and they were still leading by 20 at the last break, before Old Scotch lifted in the last stanza.

Excellent 1st Q Followed by Disappointing Last

1st Q

The first term was a dream start to a game with Old Trinity playing attacking, accountable football ands setting up countless scoring opportunities. Newcomer Josh Dart started the action with a great snap just 2 minutes and 55 seconds into the game. Chadwick got the next one after some ducking and weaving and Kepitis, Fogarty, Jack Hunt,  Murphy and Sheahan followed. The scoreboard attendant was rushed off his feet in adding the visitor’s goal tally as it reached seven.Downback Potter, Farrelly and Young were playing accountable footy and keeping the home side to two goals for the term. The midfield in the Hunt boys, Blandthorn,Fogarty and Spassopoulos were winning the centre clearances and controlling all ball movement forward of the square.

At quarter time Old Trinity led by 35 points.

2nd Q

The second term was a low scoring contest with both sides having opportunities to convert. Old Trinity kicked 2-2 for the term , to Old Scotch’s 1- 4.The visitor’s won the quarter through great play by Bonnington, May, Chadwick and Dart. With a bench of two Old Trinity was right in the contest. Cowley was dangerous around goal while Piccolo was winning plenty of the ball across the back sector. Brandon – Jones was plugging holes across half back as Old Trinity stood up all over the ground.

At half time Old Trinity led by 39 points.

3rd Q

The third term’s objectives were to win the hard ball contests and shut down the opposition’s avenues to goal. It was a tough quarter and Old Scotch kicked 5- 4, to Old Trinity’s 1-2. It was a hard slog in cold conditions. The ball was heavy and the bone crunching tackles were wearing down both sides. In a tight encounter May, Brandon Jones, Fogarty and the Hunt boys stood up. Sheahan kicked Old Trinity’s only goal for the term.

At ¾ time Old Trinity led by 20 points.

4th Q

The final term was a cracker for the larger than anticipated crowd at the Camberwell Sports ground. Old Scotch worked hard and started to kick valuable goals. Farrelly tried hard all day and was given support by “Woody”, Spassopoulos, Young, Piccolo and Potter. The OTs rallied and fought out the game. Jack Hunt kicked a great team lifting goal to keep the visitor’s in the game. The backline tried hard but were over run by numbers at the ball. Old Scotch hit targets and kicked goals whereas Old Trinity missed targets and several turnovers proved costly in the end. Dart kicked a magical goal from the boundary but it left the O.T.’s 3 points short and that was the final margin!

Old Trinity  8-2    10-4      11-6            13-9 87

Coach’s comment – This group is improving every week. A great effort to go down to the number three side by three points but we need to finish games off, especially if we are 30 points up at half time.
