Victory Rant - by a Whisker

Rosco's Rant

Ranting is so much more fun after a victory. Old Trinity claimed it's second victory of the year with a come from behind win against St Bede’s. In a game that had it all, Old Trinity finished the stronger to run out four point victors. There were scenes of sheer relief after the siren as our players realised how easily the result could have gone the other way. To win away from the world of football, Football World, was pleasing. Old Trinity seemed to enjoy the cosy surrounds of the suburban ground. Getting the ball moving quickly was the secret ingredient on the small oval.

The game began at the start of the game (which happens most weeks). Both sides threw themselves at the contest early which indicated it was going to be a tightly contested encounter. Jake Gibson was very solid across half back, Ben Weissenfeld had early touches in the middle while Cam Stockdale and Riley McDonald were lively in the forward line. Old Trinity had a lot of early play however couldn't capitalise on the scoreboard. St Bede’s led at the first break.

The second term laid the platform for the victory. St Bede’s came out hard from the outset and kicked early goals. To the credit of every Old Trinity player, we were able to hold their charge and contain St Bede’s to a certain degree. Jake Gibson was important across half back and Anthony Kenna and Andrew Marsden were solid in the back fifty. Our turnovers were the main reason that St Bede’s went into half time five goals in front.

Many supporters noted after the senior game that the Old Trinity 2nd XVIII seemed to improve significantly as soon as I moved away from the coaches box. I was hurt and offended and a little bit hurt by these suggestions. While I was in the senior team meeting, Old Trinity piled on six goals in twelve minutes to take the lead. Jonny Gillies kicked two early goals and the midfield got on top with the likes of Joel Aitken, Nick Stebbins, Ben Weissenfeld and Heath Banfield dominating. The contested football work was excellent with all players willing to put their head over the ball. Tim Delphine, Jake Gibson and Anthony Kenna provided clean use of the ball out of defensive fifty which set up many forward thrusts. Old Trinity still managed to miss two simple set shots on goal which greatly upset Humbler, Munroe and Andrews. Even an old lady pushing a trolley in the Coles carpark was disgusted by the missed opportunities.

The final quarter was a battle of wills. St Bede’s got the first goal but Old Trinity settled and fought back. Tom Fogarty was sensational at full back against the St Bede’s full forward. St Bede’s led for most of the quarter until Riley McDonald marked on the lead. In casual fashion he went back and slotted a major to give Old Trinity the lead. The centre bounce was thumped forward by Fergus Stewart into the hands of Chris Beaton. You could probably say Chris tried to do a little bit to much with the ball, especially when there was only ten seconds left on the clock. A holding the ball decision was paid and St Bede’s rushed the ball forward. The siren sounded as one of the St Bede’s players had a shot on goal. The ball sailed wide and Old Trinity held on for a memorable victory.

It was a great team effort. This week Old Trinity faces Old Melburnians in a huge game at Football World. A number of players will be pushing for senior selection so make sure you get to training and work hard on the track.
