| Unders play their best game of the season; hit the front, then get run over in the last two minutes |
|
In an absolute thriller at Bulleen, the Unders hit the front with three minutes to go against a powerfull Old Xavs unit, but could not hang on in the dying seconds. Final score:- Old Trinity 4-2 6-5 8-7 11-8 74
Old Xavs 1-3 6-6 9-9 11-12 78
1st Q
The first quarter was Old Trinitys in every department. The onballers in Fogarty,Ned and Jack Hunt and Piccolo won the centre clearances and set up scoring options up forward. Murphy kicked accurately and the crumbers- Cowley and Chadwick (2) roved the packs and finished beautifully. In the back sector Oldfield, the Hunt boys, Beasley Birrell and Young shut down any glimmer of hope for the visiting Xavs outfit.
At quarter time Old Trinity led, 26 points to 9
2nd Q The second quarter saw massive pressure applied by the touring Xavs. They ran hard and kicked five goals to the T boys three. Spasspopoulos, Cerini, Bonnington, Piccolo and Tinney battled hard against the competitions number two side while Potter, Bradley and May worked the ball to the far side of the ground effectively. Goals came from Kepitis and Jack Hunt. It was a tough quarter but Old Trinity was not out of it as the siren sounded, the difference one point at the main break.
3rd Q
The third term was a very even affair with both sides giving nothing away. Old Trinity had matched the opposition in every department, except bench numbers. Two great goals came from Spassopoulos and Cowley, but were set up by great play and delivery from Young, May, Cerini and Potter. All over the ground players were under great pressure to give off or create turnovers. As the siren sounded Xavs had an eight point lead. Would it be enough?
4th Q The great thing about the Old Trinity side is that they are starting to adopt a never give in attitude and today was no exception. This game was up for grabs as Old Trinity fought hard to get close through great play by Murphy, Tinney, Fogarty and Brandon- Jones.
Goals came from Hetherington, Chadwick to edge closer. In defence Oldfield, Birrell, Young and Potter gave everything and the game was in the balance. Bradley kicked a goal to put the home side in front but the Old Xavs. ran the ball forward and in the last minute kicked a lucky goal to take the lead by four points. The game was a great effort from the Old Trinity boys who really deserved it!
Goals Chadwick 3, Cowley 2, Jack Hunt 1, Spassopoulos 1, Kepitis 1, Murphy 1, Bradley 1, Hetherington 1.
Best- Fogarty, Potter, Birrell, Ned Hunt, Jack Hunt, Chadwick.
Coachs comment Our best game of the season to head off the number two side by two points and then get run down in the last minute. Our tackling and opposition pressure let us down in a tight game. Solid improvement from a young group.
Helpers today Mike Fogarty ( team / time), Shane Mirphy (Interchange) Anderson Hunt (oranges ) John Piccolo (goal)
