GRAND FINAL EDITION

“One day in September, forever to remember!”

Under 19’s take the points in a great grand final win!

Old Trinity      3-1    7-4    9-8    14-18   102

Old Ivanhoe    4-1    4-2    6-4      6-8       44

1st Q

Old Ivanhoe attacked from the first bounce, ran the ball forward and kicked the first goal in a classic grand final start. The O.T.’s settled quickly and started to play attacking, accountable football in an even contest. The predicted rain came heavily but the strong crowd did not lose focus. Going forward Pacconi and Jessop ran wide and found Lewis who kicked accurately for Old Trinity’s first major. Old Ivanhoe continued the surge and kicked three other goals for the quarter. The backline led by Robertson, Lane and Bradley were working hard but could not stop accurate delivery from the Old Ivanhoe midfield. The O.T.’s responded through great work from Beaton, Dayno and Leetham, allowing Morrison and captain Humann to goal after great delivery and solid protection of the ball carrier. It was a tough quarter with both sides giving nothing, as one would expect in a season deciding grand final. As one spectator noted “If it’s not close it’s not worth winning!” At quarter time Old Ivanhoe led Old Trinity 4-1 to 3-1.

2nd Q

Old Trinity started beautifully and Keefe took control at the centre bounces. Jessop, Eckersley and Humann started to influence the game with lots of possessions and creative movement of the ball. Moretti was giving plenty of protection up forward while Wisenfeld was solid as usual, Dayno clean and quick, Guerra fast and accurate, as Old Trinity started to take control. Moretti goaled, followed by Humann,  Dayno and Pacconi. The game was turning and Old Trinity shut down any opposition attacks through the great work from Coutts, Young, Howell, Lane and Bradley. Old Trinity scored 4-3 for the quarter and held the opposition to 0-1. As Doug Frood would say “A great quarter of footy boys!” Ampt  and Bowman came on to provide bite as Old Ivanhoe looked for answers to problems presented from a side that defeated them two weeks ago.

At half time Old Trinity led 7-4 46, to 4-2 26.

3rd Q

The third term focus was a quarter win through second and third efforts and the Australian colours of green and gold did not disappoint. Soligo, Ampt, Morrison and Beaton worked hard to give Old Trinity run. The backline in Robertson, Howell, Young and Coutts played solid football and were terrific at the stoppages. Keefe was too strong for the Old Ivanhoe ruck brigade and at this point of the game it was hard to see Old Ivanhoe finding a winner in any position. Humann gave leadership as Leetham, Jessop, Bowman and Pacconi ran wild and set up multiple forward options. Soligo was tough in tough conditions, as was Wisenfeld and Ampt.It was a tough twenty eight minutes but it was worth it. Old Trinity won the term !

At ¾ time Old Trinity led 9-8 to Old Ivanhoe 6-4. A lead of 22 points.

4thQ

The crowd were asking “Is 22 points enough to win this game?” as they walked off the beautifully prepared St.Bernards turf. Old Trinity put up the sails and went for home. The midfielders in Howell, Pacconi, Jessop, Dayno, Leetham and Humann worked hard and presented options for Lewis, Bowman, Keefe and “fresh man” Hale. Widdowson did what he had to do down back. The crowd end goals were set alight as Old Trinity set up a 4-10 last quarter, while keeping the opposition to 0-4. As the time clock worked down the Old Trinity work rate went up .Young came off with an injury but didn’t care. Goals came from different players including Lewis, Bowman and Dayno. The rain and the opposition spirit had gone… The siren sounded and for those lucky enough to be there it was a great team victory for Old Trinity.

As in a Olympic marathon, Old Trinity set off the pace all season but came home strongly to win the 2nd semi final

by 5 points and the all important grand final by a massive 58 points !
